Today, Manolin released the first and only available system to notify farmers about the risk of non-notifiable diseases nearby. Our member companies are now receiving automatic alerts when diseases are present in their area.
Non-notifiable diseases are those not currently tracked by Norwegian government regulators, such as pasteurellosis, amoebic gill disease, cardiomyopathy syndrome, bacterial kidney disease, and more.
Outbreaks of these diseases are growing and pose a huge threat to the industry.
According to a Norwegian Veterinary Institute 2020 report, "The Health Situation in Norwegian Aquaculture," the number of localities diagnosed with cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) more than tripled between 2010 and 2020, from 49 to at least 154.
The annual survey of fish health personnel and Norwegian Food Safety Authority inspectors found that CMS was considered the most important mortality-related problem in farmed salmon in 2020. There has also been a concerning increase in outbreaks of pasteurellosis since 2017.
Manolin's industry data shows a significant increase in mortalities due to non-notifiable diseases in the past few years. While non-notifiable diseases caused fewer than 1% of total mortalities from 2012 to 2016, they caused 10% of total mortalities in 2019 and 9% in 2020. So far in 2021 (January through July), 7% of total reported mortalities are due to non-notifiable disease.
These diseases are a growing threat. In order to mitigate, the industry must properly monitor. Our farmer-only network alerts aim to give farmers more time for important changes that can prevent unnecessary mortality.
"We are excited about this update, and believe it's a significant step in disease management for this industry. For us, having a way to securely share relevant disease information within the network means we not only have more time to prevent the disease, it also allows others in the area to do the same.”
–Kristian Botnen, CEO at Lingalaks, a Manolin Essentials member company
